Last night I taught a class on 5 Principles For Brain Plasticity, using the acronym BRAIN. The talk was for the National Collegiate Scholarship Association, or NCSA. Here is a quick summary:
Be Present
Recent research points strongly to our personal level of engagement with a task, or incoming information, as our attention increases and deepens, our plasticity increases.
Rest Up
The amount of new information we can effectively assimilate into ourselves, relies mainly in our sleep. REM sleep processes the new information on the day, while deep sleep is when the important information is stored in long term memory.
Act Like It
The actions you take are far more powerful in plasticity than the affirmation you mouth. However, there are two times a day for you to reprogram yourself. As you wake up in the morning and as you are about to fall asleep you enter Theta brain wave activity. This gives you a window to your subconscious, but you then have to do the things you visualize!
Invest in Training
You don't have to spend much money to train your brain. Ask questions. Look at it through someone else's eyes. Get the BrainHQ app. Read The Brain That Changes Itself. There are many ways to train your brain in a way that you have not done before.
No Distractions
Right now I'm not distracted by the cold, because I'm under a blanket. I also decided to do nothing else but write until I'm done. Now onto something else...
